I built this AI scribe for my wife. She's a new therapist and was drowning in notes.

AfterSession turns your post-session voice memos or text into structured SOAP, DAP, or BIRP notes. No session recording. No gimmicks. Just a tool to give you your evenings back.

Why I built this

My wife became a therapist last year. Three months in, I noticed she was spending 1–2 hours every evening on notes. Most nights she started at 9pm, sometimes skipping dinner with our kids to catch up.

I'm a software engineer. I built AfterSession on nights and weekends so she could have her evenings back. 11 other therapists are using it now. One of them created 175 notes in two days.

I'm still building this on the side, bootstrapped. If you try it and it sucks, email me and tell me — I'm the one who'll read it.

Here's what it actually does:

Quick recap

“OK, this was Sarah today — work stress anxiety still front and center, said 4–5 hours of sleep this past week. We did some psychoeducation on cognitive distortions and ran through 5-4-3-2-1 grounding, she engaged well. Plan, continuing CBT, want her tracking sleep, next week same time.”

Structured note
Subjective
Client reports increased anxiety related to occupational stress. Endorses difficulty sleeping, averaging 4–5 hours per night over the past week.
Objective
Client appeared anxious but engaged. Speech coherent. Participated actively in grounding exercise during session.
Assessment
Generalized anxiety with secondary sleep disturbance. Cognitive patterns identified. Progress toward coping skills development.
Plan
Continue CBT. Assign sleep log. Practice grounding technique daily. Follow up next week.

↑ No session recording, no audio of your client. Just your own words — record a voice memo or type a quick recap, and AfterSession structures it. You stay in control.

Questions you might have

Is this HIPAA compliant?

The honest answer: HIPAA compliance is a property of your whole workflow, not just one tool. What I can tell you about AfterSession specifically:

The infrastructure is built on HIPAA-eligible AWS services (S3, Bedrock, RDS), with encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and audit logging. Audio is deleted after processing and never retained.

I sign a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with every paid subscriber. The free trial doesn't require one because you can use it without saving any client identifiers — but the BAA is ready when you upgrade.

Does my data train an AI model?

No. We don't use your data to train AI models, and we don't let third parties use it for training either.

The AWS services we use for transcription and note generation run under a BAA that prohibits training use. Your inputs go in, your structured note comes out, and that's it.

Is this just ChatGPT with a wrapper?

Fair question. No — and here's the actual difference:

ChatGPT (the consumer product) is not HIPAA-eligible, doesn't sign BAAs, and OpenAI's terms allow them to use your inputs to improve their models unless you're on an enterprise plan. So even if it produced a decent note, you couldn't legally use it for real client work.

AfterSession runs on HIPAA-eligible infrastructure under a BAA, with prompts and post-processing tuned specifically for therapy notes (SOAP/DAP/BIRP structure, mental status exam framing, appropriate clinical language). It's not magic — but the privacy posture and the output quality are designed for this use case.

What happens if I cancel?

You can cancel anytime from your settings — no long-term contracts, no "talk to a sales rep" flow.

Your notes stay in your account until you delete them. You can export them anytime, and account deletion removes everything.

Do you track therapists or sell their data?

No. We use PostHog (privacy-first product analytics) to see anonymized page visits and which buttons get clicked — never any session content, note content, or client identifiers. Session recordings are explicitly disabled. We don't sell data to anyone, and we don't share it with advertisers. The only third parties involved are AWS (under a BAA) for the AI processing, PostHog for the anonymized analytics described above, and Stripe for billing.

Why this over Mentalyc or Upheal?

They record your sessions. We don't. They're VC-funded. We're bootstrapped.

The trade-off is real — we have fewer features. But what we have, we do well, and the founder reads every support email.

How much does it cost?

Founder pricing (right now, for our first group of users): $29.95/month for the first clinician, $19.95/month for each additional clinician on the same practice. This rate is locked in for life — as long as your subscription stays active, you keep this price forever.

Standard pricing (after founder pricing closes): $49.95/month and $29.95/month.

Free trial is 7 days or 5 notes, whichever comes first. No credit card to start.

We're still early

11 paying customers. Bootstrapped. The founder reads every support email.

If you want polish and a sales team, look elsewhere. If you want a tool that works and a founder who'll text you back, this might be your thing.

“I used to stress about getting my notes done and dread how much time it would take away from my family. Now I'm done in a fraction of the time.”
